Job Description Summary:
The Virtual Desktop Engineer III will be responsible for the design, implementation, management, and optimization of the virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and remote desktop environments within a healthcare-focused health insurance company. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in virtual desktop technologies, OS and software lifecycle management, cloud-based solutions, and a strong understanding of security and regulatory compliance in the healthcare industry.

This position demands a highly skilled individual who can lead projects, mentor junior engineers, and provide advanced troubleshooting and support for end-users. The Senior Virtual Desktop Engineer will collaborate closely with the IT and Information Security teams to ensure that virtual desktop solutions align with the company's goals of maintaining secure, scalable, and efficient IT operations for all employees.

Job Description
  • VDI Architecture & Design: Lead the design and deployment of virtual desktop infrastructure solutions (e.g., Microsoft AVD on Azure HCI, VMware Horizon, Citrix, Nutanix) ensuring scalability, reliability, and security.
  • System Administration & Maintenance: Oversee the day-to-day operations of VDI and remote desktop environments, including monitoring, troubleshooting, profile management and performance optimization.
  • Security & Compliance: Ensure that all virtual desktop solutions are compliant with healthcare industry standards (e.g., HIPAA) and company security policies (CIS, NIST, SOC). Implement and manage security protocols such as multi-factor authentication (MFA), encryption, and endpoint protection.
  • Cloud Integration: Manage and integrate virtual desktop environments with cloud infrastructure providers (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud) to provide scalable, hybrid solutions.
  • Performance Tuning: Continuously assess and improve the performance and capacity of virtual desktop environments to provide optimal user experiences, particularly in high-demand scenarios.
  • Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity: Implement and manage disaster recovery (DR) plans for virtual desktop environments, ensuring business continuity in the event of system outages or failures.
  • User Support & Troubleshooting: Act as a senior escalation point for complex end-user issues related to virtual desktops and remote access, working closely with the support team to resolve issues quickly.
  • Collaboration & Mentorship: Collaborate with cross-functional teams (networking, security, application support) to ensure seamless integration of VDI systems with other enterprise solutions. Provide mentorship and training to junior engineers.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed documentation for the virtual desktop environment, including architecture diagrams, configuration standards, procedures, and troubleshooting guides. Participate in regular updates for Technology Lifecycle reporting.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in IT infrastructure management, with at least 5 years focused on virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI).
  • Proven experience with leading VDI technologies (e.g., VMware Horizon, Citrix Virtual Apps & Desktops, Microsoft AVD).
  • Hands-on experience in designing, implementing, and managing virtualized environments on cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of healthcare industry regulatory compliance (e.g., HIPAA, HITRUST) and data security best practices.
  • Proven experience with OS maintenance, software lifecycle and profile management (FSLogix, etc), application management/deployment tools (SCCM/Intune/Ivanti/Autopilot).
  • Experience working in highl.y regulated industries with a focus on securing sensitive data.
  • Expertise in virtual desktop infrastructure technologies (VMware, Citrix, Microsoft AVD).
  • Deep knowledge of networking, storage, and server environments as they relate to VDI.
  • Experience with Active Directory, Group Policy, and enterprise authentication systems.
  • Proficient in scripting and automation (PowerShell, Python, etc.) for system administration tasks.
  • Experience with disaster recovery solutions, high-availability configurations, and business continuity planning


Preferred Qualifications:
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP).
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Virtual Desktop Administrator Associate.
  • ITIL Foundation Certification or similar industry standard certification.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience with endpoint management tools (e.g., SCCM, Intune) in a virtualized environment.
  • Knowledge/awareness of containerization technologies vs virtualization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) for desktop management.
  • Familiarity with DevOps or Agile methodologies
